TV Commercials Confusing Our Childrens Understanding of Nutrition October 5, 2009 Ask a child, what is more healthy, diet coke or orange juice, fat-free ice cream or cottage cheese and you may be surprised with their answers. According to Kristin Harrison, a professor of speech communication at the University of Illinois, TV food commercials are designed to make unhealthy foods look healthy and processed diet foods tastier but equally as good as whole foods. She believes children are growing up confused on nutrition. "Given the plentitude of advertisements on television touting the health benefits of even the most nutritionally bankrupt of foods, child viewers are likely to become confused about which foods are in fact healthy."
