How to Keep Your Muscles Young

If you are an aging man or woman and feel that your muscles are shrinking, it's not your imagination. They really are getting smaller and scientists think they know why.

Researchers at the University of Nottingham recently discovered that as people age, older people cannot make muscle as fast as younger people.

The study examined two subject groups, one older and the other younger, who ate equal amounts of protein in their diet. The scientists found that the muscles of older people did not take up the protein from the blood like the muscles of younger people. The decreased protein uptake meant smaller muscles for older people.

Now researchers at Knottingham have found that the normal suppression of muscle breakdown that occurs with eating is missing in older people.

Lead scientist Michael Rennie, Professor of Clinical Physiology, compared one group of people in their late 60s to a group of 25 year olds.
