Health Benefits of Chocolate are Not All Equal October 15, 2009 Numerous studies have reported the health benefits that chocolate has on heart disease. Scientists have found that chocolate can lower blood pressure and even improve the flow of blood through arteries. These benefits are thought to occur because of the high content of antioxidants found in chocolate. All chocolates, however, are not created equal. Agricultural Research Service (ARS) researchers Jim Harnly (a chemist at the ARS Beltsville Human Nutrition Research Center), and nutritionist Ronald L. Prior, teamed up with Liwei Gu and Xianli Wu, all at the Arkansas Children's Nutrition Center in Little Rock, Arkansas to determine total antioxidant capacity (TAC) of different chocolates. Chocolate are high in antioxidants called flavonoids. Populations in various parts of the world who eat foods high in flavonoids have been associated with lower rates of cancer and heart disease.
