Decades Of Research Prove Light Smoking Kills October 27, 2009 Don't be lulled into a false sense of security if you consider yourself a light smoker. Results of a 32-year study show that just 1-5 cigarettes daily, triples the risk of death from heart disease and lung cancer compared to non-smokers. A group of researchers reported their findings in the peer-reviewed journal, Tobacco Control, after 32 years (mid-1970s-2002) of following the health and death rates of almost 43,000 people. The participants were aged 35-49 in the beginning and were each screened for heart disease and diabetes. Here are their specific findings. 1. Many light smokers increased the number of cigarettes they smoked daily over time, but did not increase the number above 9 cigarettes a day. 2. The number of those who quit smoking was close to those who increased their habit by smoking more. 3. Light smokers (1-5 cigarettes daily), relative to non-smokers, tripled their risks for death from heart disease.
