| | | October 1, 2009 With Halloween just around the corner the holidays loom ahead with their tempting weight gaining foods. But you may have a surprisingly sweet ally in the battle to maintain your weight over the holidays. In addition to being a great source of anti-oxidants, the Faculty of Life Sciences (LIFE), University of Copenhagen, has discovered that eating dark chocolate instead of milk chocolate, reduces cravings for sweet, salty, and fatty foods, and is significantly more filling than milk chocolate. Researchers studied 16 young healthy men who liked both dark and milk chocolate. The experiments took place on two separate days each after a 12-hour fast. Participants broke their fast with 100g chocolate (dark chocolate one day and milk on another) eaten within 15 minutes. Calorie content of the two chocolates was the same. For the next five hours they were asked every half hour to rate their hunger, feelings of fullness, and cravings. Two and a half hours after the chocolate was eaten, they were given unlimited pizza.
