THBWhat Are You Thinking?

Do you think more about good food to eat or more about what you are supposed to avoid? The first way of thinking leads to fulfillment and satisfaction, making you likely to eat less. The other leads to guilt and regret and the likelihood to eat more — something all of us want to avoid.

Here's what you can do to develop a healthier attitude toward food.

First, think about good food to eat like more healthy protein.  Eggs from free range chickens and grass-fed beef or bison are good choices.  Next, eat more vegetables, fruits, nuts and seeds.  You can also enjoy a bit of dark chocolate now and again. A glass of organic wine most days won't hurt either.

What should you do when your favorite foods aren't too healthy? Don't deprive yourself of them — just treat yourself occasionally.

According to Dr. Al Sears, "Having a healthy attitude toward food is as simple as enjoying the foods you eat, taking your time to taste them, and not worrying over the meal in front of you as you eat."

Well said Dr. Sears.

THBNot Enough of a Good Thing

In Friday's issue I told you about a study that showed up to 96,000 Americans die each year from a lack of omega-3 fats in their diet.   On the heels of this study comes news of a new way to test your omega-3 levels.

It's a take-home kit made by the Gene Smart company that uses a pin prick test to tell you the omega-3 levels in your blood.  It also provides a lab analysis to compare to your readings.  The company predicts that the test will help prevent heart-related deaths.  They cite recent studies that show blood levels of omega-3 components DHA and EPA are "powerful predictors of future heart events."

In fact, according to the company, the results of an omega-3 test are more accurate than traditional cholesterol tests in predicting a future heart attack.  The at-home test will also help people determine how much omega-3 fat should be in their diet.   Since everyone metabolizes omega-3's at different rates, a reasonable intake for one person may be too low for another.

While the kit's price tag of $150 is on the high side, compared to the cost of a heart attack, it's well worth the investment.

THBThe War on Pain

I learned something recently about osteoarthritis (OA).  According to Dr. Mark Bromson, women seem to be more affected by the disease after age 55 and men before age 45.

This painful condition occurs when cartilage that serves as a cushion between your bones and joints breaks down.  First it becomes rough and causes irritation in the affected area.  But eventually, this "cushion" disappears entirely.  When this happens, the ends of your bones become damaged leaving your joints tender and painful.

Here's something else researchers are learning about OA.  The cause is suspected to be a combination of factors including a weakened immune system.

In this important article, Dr. Bromson explains how you can fight back against OA with natural substances that heal your joints and improve your immune health.

THBSave a Life and a Tree

It's not often that man and nature find themselves in a win-win situation.  But that may be the case in the southeastern US when it comes to kudzu.  The vining plant was first brought here from Japan over 100 years ago.  Its large leaves and fragrant blooms made it a favorite of gardeners.

The "miracle vine" as it was called, was planted throughout the South to help prevent erosion.  And it did a great job since it's nearly impossible to kill.  But now that's turned into a huge problem.  Kudzu has taken over 10 million acres of land and is now choking off sunlight to valuable forests.

So how do we win?

A recent study shows that the roots of the vine may improve heart health.  When rats were given the root extract they showed improvement in the symptoms of Metabolic syndrome — the condition that leads to diabetes and heart disease.

A major finding was that the test animals' total cholesterol went down 50%.  That's better than the track record of most statin drugs!

Kudzu extract is already becoming popular as an herbal supplement.  If these findings hold up, you'll be seeing a lot more of it on the shelves of your health food store.  I can't think of a better way to stay healthy and save a tree.

Metabolic Syndrome, or Syndrome X, kills million every year, but you'd never know that from listening to mainstream medicine. To learn the truth about Syndrome X and how to protectyourself (and lose any excess weight as a "side effect,") click here.
