Food nutrition science has shown that the DASH diet; a diet rich in whole grains, fruits, vegetables, low-fat dairy, and nuts with less red and processed meats, salt, and sweetened drinks, may reduce the risk for our body's chemistry to make kidney stones. While kidney stones are in themselves unpleasant, they are also associated with the higher rates of high blood pressure, diabetes, and excess weight increasing the importance of preventing their formation. The DASH diet (Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension), has been shown by Dr. Eric Taylor, MD, of the Maine Medical Center along with his associates at Brigham and Women's Hospital to effectively reduce the risk for kidney stones by 40-45%.
