Fat Cells Increase Risk

September 14, 2009

Investigators may have found a key link between obesity and disease. Obesity is associated with diabetes, cancer and heart disease but how obesity contributes to the development of these disease states has been a mystery. Yuichi Oike of Kumamoto Japan and his team think they have the answer.

Researches have known for some time that fat cells release biochemical agents that can activate the immune system igniting a low-grade state of inflammation. If the inflammation persists, the walls of arteries can be damaged leading to plaque formation and cells can become resistant to insulin raising insulin levels. This increased insulin resistance has been associated with diabetes, cancer and heart disease.

Oike and his fellow researches have identified a key protein agent released from fat, called agiopoietin-like protein 2 or Agptl2 that triggers the inflammatory cascade. Stop the release of this protein from the fat and the negative disease promoting effects of obesity could be aborted.

Oike showed that obese mice lacking Angptl2 had less inflammation in their tissues and were less insulin resistant.
