Alarming Trends In Teen's Diet September 16, 2009 As competition increases for the food dollar and marketing forces continue to influence what teenagers will buy or chose to eat, a few alarming losers standout. A study conducted at the University of Minnesota was designed to determine changes in the consumption of fruits and vegetables by teens from 1999 to 2004. 944 boys and 1,161 girls participated in the surveys. These are their findings: 1. High school students ate one serving less each day relative to what they ate in middle school. Girls in high school averaged three servings and boys had only two servings daily. 2. As teens became adults they dropped another daily serving. 3. Mid-adolescent girls in 2004 ate a serving less daily compared to a similar group of girls in 1999. The boys average dropped a half serving in 2004. Nicole Larson, MPH, lead author and registered dietitian suggests, "This is giving us the message that we need new and enhanced efforts to increase fruit and vegetable intake that we haven't been doing in the past. Our kids know it is healthier to eat fruits and vegetables but aren't eating them at the recommended levels.
