Controlling Inflammation Reduces Heart Disease August 18, 2009 Too much fat in the blood in the form of high cholesterol or high triglycerides is dangerous and can lead to heart attacks or strokes.  This part of the story many of us are already familiar with.  The rest of the story, however, may be new for most of us. What researches have discovered is the real driver of plaque formation in arteries is inflammation.  Much like building a house, fats are the bricks necessary to build plaque but building a house is a process and inflammation is the process that uses fat to accomplish its designs.  We have all had a cut or sore on the skin that has become red and inflamed.  Our body is designed to quickly respond by fighting infection and healing the wound.  The inflamed skin eventually returns to its normal appearance, with the possible exception of a scar.  This same process goes on in our veins and arteries and is a normal part of our body's functions.  Sometimes the sore or lesion in the artery doesn't heal and this constant state of inflammation is called atherosclerosis which is a major cause of heart attacks and heart disease.
