A Warning For Women With Depression Symptoms November 16, 2009 Researchers at Columbia University Medical Center are studying the cause and effect relationship between clinical depression in women and their risk of death from cardiac events. Dr. William Whang, MD, MS, said, "It's important for women with depression to be aware of the possible association between depression and heart disease, and work with their health care providers to manage their risk for coronary heart disease." 63,469 healthy women either taking anti-depressants or those with severe depression symptoms were chosen for this study. The data suggest: 1. The women with depression did show a higher risk for sudden cardiac death (SCD) and fatal coronary heart disease (CHD). 2. Sudden cardiac death was twice as likely for those with depression particularly those taking anti-depressants. 3. The use of antidepressants was not associated with nonfatal heart attack or fatal coronary heart disease.
