The Psychological Benefits of Exercise November 5, 2009 A recent study by UF exercise psychologist Heather Hausenblas and research associate Anna Campbell is the first to systematically analyze the wide-ranged effects of exercise on body image. Research shows that people who are overweight and in poor health psychologically benefit from performing simple exercise and feel better about their bodies overall after working out. This discovery has created a great buzz in the medical community and is being studied. Apparently, people in poor health receive just as much satisfaction as fit people from exercising! Hausenblas stated, '"You would think that if you become more fit that you would experience greater improvements in terms of body image, but that's not what we found," she said. "It may be that the requirements to receive the psychological benefits of exercise, including those relating to body image, differ substantially from the physical benefits."'
