Patients that were born before 1918 are showing a natural immunity to the H1N1 virus. These groups of people have natural antibodies that neutralize the swine flu virus. The new virus has been seen to replicate more efficiently in the lungs of the test mice and ferrets, a similar characteristic of the 1918 virus. The young and otherwise healthy population that has been most susceptible to the H1N1 virus is a similar demographic to those most affected in the 1918 outbreak. The United States, as well as other countries, is continuing in its fight against the need to label food produced through the use of genetic modification (GM). 90% of Americans, Africans, and Europeans want to have GMOs labeled so the people consuming the foods can make an informed decision about what they wish to put into their bodies. The multinational corporations that profit from GMOs understand that once people actually know what they are putting into their bodies, the profits will fall through the floor. Once again they are putting their profits before our health. These food corporations are trying to push the fallacy that "GM/GE foods are in no way different from other foods simply due to their method of production," as a fact. This is a flat-out lie; perhaps they would know this if they were required by the FDA to actually test their products for safety, but, unfortunately, they are not required to do such a thing. Joseph Biederman, a Harvard psychiatrist, was caught last year by Congressional investigators, exposing the exploitative practices occurring between the pharmaceutical industry and psychiatrists. Joseph Biederman is the man most responsible for the flare-up of children taking psychiatric drugs for ADHD and bipolar disorder. Congress nailed him in 2008 for taking $1.6 million from drug makers for seven years, from 2000 to 2007. Biederman was required by law to present documentation pertaining to his affiliation with Johnson & Johnson, a major pharmaceutical company. These documents revealed, as reported by the New York Times, the bribery taking place to get Johnson & Johnson's psychiatric drugs tested, passed, and pushed by psychiatrists for ADHD children. Biederman, in his research center funded by Johnson & Johnson, conducted many studies involving antipsychotic and ADHD medications, such as Risperdal and Concerta, and their effects on children after prolonged use. His findings alleviated concerns of long term side-effects; however, it has since been established that there are long-term dangers of ADHD drug use in children. The recent July 2009 article in the Scientific American Mind gives a comprehensive report of the real dangers behind these drugs and children. Psychiatrists are essentially prescribing AMPHETAMINES to children, and Big Pharma has been bribing them to do so. The long term effects include a heightened risk of adulthood depression and anxiety, Parkinson's disease, as well as stunted growth and development. The amphetamine-like drugs, methylphenidate (i.e. Ritalin and Concerta), have a chemical structure similar to cocaine, and has a very similar effect on the brain; long term use of these psychiatric drugs can have the same effect as long term use of cocaine. These drugs are being prescribed to our children as early as three years old, and the general public is allowing this to happen, once again, because a white-coat's word is trusted. Child receiving flu shot It has been reported, and confirmed by doctors that the first doses of the new swine flu vaccine will be administered to the public before it has fully been tested for safety and effectiveness. The intention is to provide "maximum protection" against the pandemic and in the least amount of time. Children, who are at the greatest risk for falling ill to the swine flu and can spread it quickly, are expected to be among the first in line for the needle. They will be receiving the shot possibly over a month before any trial results are available. Apparently, administering a vaccine that has not yet been approved for safety is the health officials' way of "nipping it in the bud." They are claiming that this is the best way to assure that this does not get worse. An unsafe vaccine distributed at large could in fact be far worse than the virus against which we are fighting. The swine flu outbreak of 1976 is a perfect example. 200 soldiers at the Fort Dix military camp in New Jersey were infected with swine flu; one had died, and twelve had been hospitalized. A vaccine program was quickly implemented as a means of stopping it before it got worse, similar to what we are doing now. The vaccine was distributed to over 40 million people, 25 of whom died, and 500 had developed Guillain-Barre syndrome, a potentially fatal disease. James McClain, a Ph,D. in cancer prevention at the National Cancer Institute and primary author of the study reports, "Greater participation in physical activity has consistently been associated with reduced risk of cancer incidence at several sites, including breast and colon cancers."  However, "short duration sleep appears to have opposing effects of physical activity on several key hormonal and metabolic parameters, which is we why looked at how it affected the exercise cancer risk relationship." Scientists achieve significant stem-cell breakthrough

In the study, a team led by Juan Carlos Izpisúa Belmonte, of the Salk Institute in La Jolla, California, extracted cells from six patients with a rare genetic disease called Fanconi anemia. This recessive genetic disorder, which causes bone marrow failure, luekemia and other cancers, is often fatal unless the patient is able to undergo a bone marrow transplant from a perfectly matched donor.

To correct the gene that causes the disease, the researchers infected the extracted cells with a genetically modified virus, which were then reprogrammed into an embryo-like state to create induced pluripotent stem cells (IPS cells). When the IPS cells were grown in culture, they developed into the type of blood progenitor cells that are required for transplant in therapies used with Fanconi anemia patients. Because the IPS cells had been corrected, they no longer had the genetic defect that causes the disease - yet were genetically identical to the patient's own tissue and should be able to be transplanted without the risk of rejection by the body's immune system. Their work was recently published online in the journal, Nature.

"We haven't cured a human being, but we have cured a cell. In theory we could transplant it into a human and cure the disease," says Professor Belmonte, who notes that their work has taken more than two years already. "In principle, our approach could be used with any disease that could be corrected by gene therapy and where there is loss or alteration of a specific cell type," he adds.

Additional work needs to be done to improve the technology in order to produce cells that can be safely transplanted into patients. As Chris Mathew, a molecular geneticist at King's College London, writes in a statement: "The current reprogramming and gene therapy techniques - which both involve introducing foreign DNA with potentially cancer-causing viruses - are not suitable for therapeutic application, but researchers are working on developing safer reprogramming methods."

Stem Cells May Free Diabetics From Insulin

Type 1 diabetics may be able to free themselves from insulin shots with injections of their own stem cells.

A research team from the University of São Paulo in Brazil and Northwestern University near Chicago has treated patients with Type 1 diabetes by treating them with their own stem cells.

In 2007, Dr. Julio Voltarelli of the University of São Paulo reported the successful treatment of 15 patients with Type 1 diabetes who were able to eliminate the daily, painful grind of insulin injections. In the new study, which included an additional eight patients, the stem-cell treatment led to the resurgence of insulin-producing beta cells in the pancreas.

“I wouldn’t use the word cure,” said Dr. Richard Burt of Northwestern University, a co-author. “But it appears we changed the natural history of the disease. It’s the first therapy for patients that leaves them treatment-free — no insulin, no immune suppression for almost five years,” he told Time magazine.

The treatment extracts and stores a patient’s stem cells. Patients then receive drugs, similar to those cancer patients receive, to destroy their immune systems. During the procedure, the elements in their immune systems that destroy the insulin-producing cells also are destroyed. When the stored stem cells are re-injected into patients, the cells regenerate a new immune system free of the elements that attack and kill the insulin-producing cells.

The treatment helped 20 of the 23 diabetics. Patients were free of insulin injections in an average of 31 months, and 12 remain insulin-free. Even though eight had to return to using insulin, the amounts needed were reduced. In some patients the levels of C-peptide, a component that is a result of insulin being produced, tripled.

Type 1 diabetes occurs when a patient’s immune system attacks itself and begins destroying cells in the pancreas that produce insulin, the hormone that keeps blood sugar levels even. In the past, it was referred to as “juvenile diabetes” because the majority of cases were diagnosed in children. More than 1 million Americans, both adults and children, have the disease.
