The Michael Masterson Journal

MM Journal

Saturday - December 26, 2009

I hope you enjoyed yourself on Friday. Whether you celebrate Christmas or not, I hope you had a very good day.

When you head back to work Monday (or if you're back at work today), resist the urge to plunge in fully.

Don't make it a regular day. If you typically schedule eight hours of work, schedule only five or six. Spend an extra hour relaxing and another hour thinking about the year that's passed and the year that's coming.

Make a mental list of those who have helped you succeed this year. And another list of people you've helped.

Ask yourself what you'd most like to accomplish in 2010. You don't need to come to a definitive answer today. Just get your subconscious mind working on it.

If you have the opportunity, spend some time talking to friends and colleagues about their accomplishments and goals. This will give you good ideas. It may even deepen your relationships a bit.

We'll talk more in the near future about what to do with this mental list. And how you can turn "resolutions" into goals you can achieve in 2010.

As I've mentioned in the past, Dr. Al Sears guides my nutrition and exercise routine. I also turn to him for more in-depth anti-aging therapies. In a recent e-mail to his subscribers, Dr. Sears mentioned his breakthrough supplement for "turning on" the genes that promote longevity and health -- no matter what "bad" DNA you inherited.

You probably know part of the story. The compound resveratrol has been talked about on 60 Minutes and all over the Internet. But what the mainstream media got wrong, says Dr. Sears, is that resveratrol is only one small piece of the puzzle. Here's what he had to say:

"Here at my clinic, I combine two other nutrients with resveratrol for a formula with stronger gene-switching power. I added EGCG (green tea extract) and SOD (the most potent antioxidant your body makes on its own).

"I'm sure you've heard about green tea. Clinical testing continues to amaze the medical world. It's one of nature's great gifts. SOD is the most powerful antioxidant your body has. Antioxidants that come from vitamins and food sources pale in comparison. SOD is the 'master guardian' of your body's immune system and is your number one primary antioxidant.

"It's so vital, production of SOD starts when you're in the womb. In one study, genetically engineered mice whose bodies couldn't make their own SOD died in just days from massive free radical damage.

"You don't have to figure out which genes will give you the happiest, most vibrant life. These nutrients do it for you.

"Together, these three nutrients make what I call RES-3. It's ready for you right now."

I trust Dr. Sears. You should too. Check out more details on this supplement here.

I'm taking yoga again, twice a week before work. This ancient Hindu practice has been very helpful to me in the past. It's healed a chronically ailing back, increased the flexibility of my hips and shoulders (the two most problematic areas for most middle-aged former athletes), and I'm sure it's been good for my internal organs. I can feel it.

I took yoga lessons regularly for about a year several years ago, and then stopped when my instructor moved away. Since then, I've practiced a few postures every morning -- but without taking lessons, I wasn't getting any better.

Yoga, like golf or Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, is extremely technical. There is no end to what you can learn. It's possible to keep getting better at yoga for 50 or 60 years. You can improve your movements till the day you drift off into Namaste land.

My new instructor, a very knowledgeable yogi (most "teachers" in America are rank amateurs posing as experts), explained that before you can master yoga you must master three personal skills:

1. The skill of memory

2. The skill of practice

3. The skill of dissolving the ego

That seemed exactly right to me. For these are the same personal skills it takes to master Jiu Jitsu. (And I suspect they are the skills you need to master any complex activity.)

  • Memory is the most obvious. You need to develop your memory -- both physical and mental -- so you can execute the skills you have been taught.
  • Practice is the least appreciated -- for two reasons. Many people believe that unless they have a "talent" for a complex skill, they can never be really good at it. This is foolishness. You can master almost anything if you are willing to spend enough time -- maybe 5,000 hours -- practicing it under the instruction of a master teacher.
  • Dissolving the ego is the most difficult of the three personal skills. Only one person in a hundred can do it. But to get to a master's level, you must be able to two things: (1) Be humble enough to accept your mediocrity when you are mediocre, and (2) separate your emotions from your desired outcome. You can do that only if you have control of your ego.

If you understand this, you understand a great deal about self-improvement.

"Things suck," Jerry said.

"Why's that?" I asked, worried that someone in his family was ill.

"I got laid off."

He'd been working as a manager for Office Depot for the past 10 years. Before that, he had a successful plumbing supply business. He sold that when his kids headed off to college because he wanted to "take it easy" and just live off his investments.

But taking it easy lasted only two years. After the tech bubble burst, he was forced to go back to work. Rather than start a new business, he went to work as an employee. Employment felt easier and more secure, he told me at the time. Now, he felt very differently.

I suggested a number of ideas, all of which he turned down. "I'm too old to start over," he said. He is 65 years old.

Later that night, I Googled "late bloomers" -- and these are a few of the nuggets I found:

  • Verdi composed his Ave Maria at age 85.

  • Harlan Sanders started Kentucky Fried Chicken at 65.

  • Ronald Reagan didn't get into politics until he was 55.

  • Laura Ingalls Wilder (author of Little House on the Prairie) published her first book in her 60s.

  • Rodney Dangerfield didn't start doing comedy until he was 45.

  • Cezanne's most highly prized paintings were done in his 60s.

  • Alfred Hitchcock's best films, including Vertigo and Psycho, were done in his late 50s and early 60s.

I'll be 60 next year. So I can appreciate Jerry's desire to have less stress in his life. But I decided a long time ago that I wasn't going to give in to age easily. I wasn't going to "go gentle into that good night."

For a while, I thought I'd have to accept living with stress in order to accomplish everything I wanted to do. But since I've been writing about (and experimenting with) productivity strategies, I've come to believe that when it comes to personal accomplishments, you can have your cake and eat it too.

You can have less stress and also accomplish more by:

  • Following a good goal-setting program

  • Setting aside time every day for exercise

  • Getting at least seven hours of good sleep every night

  • Eating for energy (high protein, low carbs, etc.)

2009 was probably the least-stressed I've been in twenty years. And yet I was able to accomplish an awful lot. Here is some of what I did this year:

  • Wrote two new books that will be published next year

  • Finished two books from last year that will be published this year

  • Wrote 50 poems, six short stories, and 16 chapters of a novel

  • Produced a feature-length and a documentary film

  • Competed in two national Jiu Jitsu championships and won three first-place trophies

  • Wrote 50+ essays for Early to Rise

  • Painted a half dozen paintings

  • Wrote hundreds of briefs for Early to Rise and the Michael Masterson Journal

  • Consulted with half a dozen companies

  • Started a fine-art business

  • Studied Spanish and French

  • Read more than 30 business books

  • Learned 300+ new words

  • Traveled to Paris, London, New York, Los Angeles, New Orleans, San Francisco, Denver, Las Vegas, Baltimore, Panama, Rio de Janeiro, Morocco, and Nicaragua

  • Bought and renovated two rental properties

  • Learned to play golf

  • Began the development of a community center in Nicaragua

One of the books I wrote this year has been expanded into a program that will be called something like Creating Abundance: Your Master Plan for Living a Richer, Healthier, More Enjoyable Life Starting TODAY.

Among other things, this program will teach you:

  • How to Allocate Your Hours for Maximum Productivity

  • 3 Steps to Success: Thinking, Acting, and Breaking Up the Day

  • A Daily Eating Routine for a Healthy and Productive Life

  • 4 Things You Can Do to Give Yourself More Time to Be More Successful

  • The Vocabulary of Accomplishment

  • Why You Must WRITE DOWN Your Goals

  • How to Use Daily Task Lists to Accomplish Your Goals

  • How to Make Measurable Progress Toward Your Most-Neglected Goal: The Junkie's Secret

  • Why Positive Thinking Doesn't Work

ETR will be publishing the program next year at a price of $500 to $1,000. But if you'd like to find out how you can get it for free -- and start working on your goal setting immediately -- go here.

Are You Taking the Right Kind of Vitamin D?

TOTAL HEALTH BREAKTHROUGHS

Dear THB Reader,

I can hardly say enough good things about vitamin D. In fact, there is so much to say that Dr. Al Sears and I wrote a 270-page book about it... with more than 200 scientific references.

Vitamin D is essential to your health. There is no other way around it. And many people aren't getting enough!

We don't get enough sun (especially in the fall and winter). And vitamin D is in very few foods. That is why it is such an important supplement.

But you have to be sure you're taking the right kind. The vitamin D in some supplements is synthetic. It just doesn't work the same way in your body.

That's why I'm excited to let you know about a new formula... with the natural form of vitamin D your body can use. And that's not all... this breakthrough supplement also includes 13 more youthful miracles in every capsule!

I encourage you to learn more by clicking here...

THB: The Rise of "Medical Tourism"

BREAKTHROUGHS

The Rise of "Medical Tourism"
December 23, 2009

Jon Herring
Editorial Director, Total Health Breakthroughs

Several years ago, I enjoyed an amazing vacation in Costa Rica.

Shortly after I arrived, I found myself reclining in a comfortable leather chair. I leaned back and relaxed, staring at the flawless blue sky and the steep, misty mountains surrounding San Jose.

Soft, soothing music played in the background. I was beginning to drift off when a young woman walked over. She placed her hand on my shoulder.

"Good afternoon, Jon. I hope you're comfortable," she said, in perfect English. "Can I adjust the chair for you? Would you like something to drink?"

"No, thank you. I'm just fine." I told her.

A few moments later, Dr. Telma Rubinstein walked in and sat down beside me.

"We have a long day ahead, Jon. Are you ready to begin?" she asked.

I nodded - and with that, she flipped a switch on the light above my head and began to examine the inside of my mouth.

Seven hours later, after three specialists had completed 10 separate dental procedures, I was walked out the doors of Prisma Dental. My mouth was sore and numb, but I was ready to enjoy the rest of my "vacation."

For the next ten days, I traveled in Costa Rica and Nicaragua. At the end of my trip, I returned to San Jose, where Dr. Rubinstein completed my dental work.

My trip to Central America is just one example of what has become known as "medical tourism."

For a variety of reasons, people from around the world are traveling abroad to obtain dental, medical, and surgical treatment. In many cases, the cost savings are so substantial that the "tourism" aspect of the trip is an added bonus.

Say Goodbye to Bags and Sags!

Triumph over the annoyances of aging and thrive every day... for life!

Finally -- the anti-aging solution with:

  • A first-rate memory...
  • Keen eyes and sharp ears...
  • A strong-pumping heart...
  • Tip-top immune defenses against "body breakdown"...
  • And endless vigor!

An article in India's BusinessWorld Magazine states that "medical tourism" accounts for more than $40 billion a year in medical and travel expenses. A study performed by Deloitte Consulting suggests that more than three million Americans will travel for medical procedures in 2010. And these numbers are growing rapidly.

The top regional destination for medical tourists is Asia. Singapore, Thailand, Malaysia and India attract well over a million medical travelers each year. But large numbers of people are also traveling to Central and South America. They are able to enjoy high-quality, affordable healthcare. And at the same time they enjoy numerous options for tourism and convalescing in the tropical air and healing sunlight.

Why Would Someone Travel for Healthcare?

Over the last 20 years, the standard of healthcare has rapidly improved in a growing number of lesser developed countries. In many cases, the doctors and specialists in these countries were trained in the top medical and dental schools in the U.S. These emerging countries boast a variety of modern hospitals and state-of-the-art outpatient facilities. Often, the technology is newer and even more advanced than the equipment used in facilities here.

The bottom line is that many lesser developed countries now offer world-class medical services. In fact, they often exceed the standards you would expect in the U.S. or Europe - but at a small fraction of the cost.

Medical tourism began primarily with elective and cosmetic procedures. Today, growing numbers are traveling for life-saving and medically necessary procedures, such as joint replacements, cataract surgery, bone marrow transplants, and even bypass surgery. Virtually any medical procedure can be safely obtained for pennies on the dollar in a foreign country.

A recent CNN article told the story of 61-year old, Sandra Giustina. Without insurance, she had no way to afford the heart surgery she needed to correct an abnormal heart rhythm. The surgery would have cost $175,000 in the United States. Instead, she traveled to New Delhi, India. There she had the operation for less than $10,000. That included the cost of travel… and a brief vacation after her recovery.

And her experience was not unusual. According to the Medical Tourism Association, here are the approximate costs of several procedures:

Heart Bypass
$150,000 in the U.S. $8,500 in India
Liver Transplant
$315,000 in the U.S. $75,000 in Latin America
Dental Implant
$2,500 in the U.S. $1,000 in Costa Rica
Face Lift
$15,000 in the U.S. $4,000 in Singapore
Knee Replacement
$40,000+ in the U.S. $10,650 in Mexico
Hip Replacement
$50,000+ in the U.S. $8,000 in Philippines
Bone Marrow Transplant
$250,000 in the U.S. $25,000 in India

When you consider the costs, it is easy to see why medical tourism is booming. But cost is not the only reason why people are traveling for healthcare.

Surging demand in the developed world is exposing the flaws in our system. Under the socialized healthcare plans in the in the U.K and Canada, for example, some patients are required to wait years for treatment they need today.

In the U.S., the wait times are not as long, but the medical system has become a massive paper-pushing bureaucracy. It is plagued by fraud, inefficiency and waste. And the costs of healthcare have risen to the point of being ridiculous. Those who are uninsured have very few choices, within the current system.

In fact, before the financial and housing crisis, the number one cause of bankruptcy in the United States was due to medical expenses. This is not surprising when you consider that 45 million Americans have no health insurance coverage.

What about the Service and Standard of Care?

Doctors, dentists, and hospitals that cater to medical travelers actually have to meet a higher standard of service than those in your home country. These facilities and practitioners have to compete in the free market for cash-paying customers.

They also get much of their business from word-of-mouth referrals. Unless their patients receive a high-quality experience, they are unlikely to spread the word.

In some cases, options exist for full-service travel arrangements, private chefs and adjoining suites where family members can stay close to their loved ones.

An appointment with a specialist, diagnostic testing and follow-up can often be completed within hours. In the U.S., that would usually require several appointments and hours upon hours in waiting rooms.

Why I went to Costa Rica to have my teeth fixed...

One of the fastest-growing areas of medical tourism is dentistry. That is because most people don't have comprehensive dental coverage.

In my case, most of the work was necessary. I had a broken tooth. I needed a root canal and an implant. And I needed to have a few fillings replaced. On top of that, I wanted to fix two gaps in my smile.

When I priced all this work here in the states, the total came to more than $18,000. And none of it was covered by insurance.

Based on my research, I knew there were a number of first-class dental practices in Costa Rica. It is a quick flight to get down there. And the cost of dental care is very low there, compared to the U.S.

I chose a practice called, Prisma Dental. The facility is bright, clean and modern. It also happens to be the friendliest and most accommodating dental practice I have ever visited. More importantly, the dental work that they performed was better than any I have received in the past. (And, no, I did not - and will not - receive any discount or commission for this recommendation.)

By getting the work done in Costa Rica, I received as good or better results than I could have expected here in the states. And it cost me less than one-third of what I was quoted here. My entire bill for the trip, including travel and lodging, was around $6,000.

That amounts to a savings of more than $12,000 - and a free vacation in Central America.

What are the downsides?

You can get some of the best health care in the world here in the United States - and, in some cases, some of the worst. The same can be true in other countries as well. But there are some obvious downsides to consider:

  • Your insurance policy may not cover treatment (although more and more plans are offering coverage). If your plan does offer coverage, you may have to pay first and wait for reimbursement.
  • All surgeries and medical procedures carry a certain level of risk. This is true, no matter where they are performed. But if a procedure goes wrong overseas, you have the added complication of being far from home.
  • There is little opportunity for follow-up care. It might be a good idea to give yourself a few extra "cushion" days after your last appointment and before you plan to leave the country.
  • Part of the savings you achieve in a foreign country is because they are not strapped by the same malpractice litigation we see in the states. High-quality facilities still have full coverage, of course. But due diligence is imperative.

I hope I've opened your eyes to the many possibilities that exist. As always, my best advice is to focus on "health care" so that you won't need "medical care". But if you find yourself or a loved one in a position where a medical or dental procedure is necessary, now you're aware of other options you may consider.

TOTAL HEALTH BREAKTHROUGHS
By Jon Herring - Editorial Director Tuesday, December 22nd

"If you had to give me just one piece of advice about health, what would it be?" Rob asked.

I was at a Christmas party this past weekend, catching up with our family friend Rob. I was telling him about Total Health Breakthroughs and what I do. And he was telling me about the positive changes he has made to his health in the past year.

Several things came to mind to answer his question. "You should be sure that you are getting enough vitamin D," I said. "Eat an antioxidant rich diet. And cut out the sugar and stick to low-glycemic foods."

"That is three things," he said. "If you could tell me just ONE thing to do, what would it be?"

"Consume more omega-3 fatty acids," I said.

Rob and I were just making conversation. Of course, there is more than one thing you should do to maintain and protect your health. But eating a diet rich in omega-3 essential fatty acids is certainly near the top, in terms of importance.

Omega-3 fatty acids are vital for your brain and your heart. They can boost your immunity. They can improve athletic performance. They can tame inflammation. They improve lung function. They can even help you lose weight.

In fact, there are more positive, peer-reviewed studies about the benefits of omega-3 fatty acids than any other food or nutrient. You would be hard pressed to find a single health condition that cannot be improved by optimal omega-3 levels in the body.

On the flipside, the risks of every degenerative disease increase when omega-3s are deficient in the diet. Unfortunately, our modern diet is chronically deficient in these healthy and essential fats.

In this issue, I will discuss a few of the many, many benefits of omega-3 fatty acids. I will also show you why fish oil (not flaxseed oil) is the best source of omega-3s... and why mercury pollution in not a concern in fish oil...

Want to Lose Fat? Take Your Fish Oil...

Contrary to the government's faulty Food Pyramid, not all fats are created equal. Certainly, some fats will increase your risk of cancer and heart disease, and cause you to gain weight. But healthy fats can not only improve the health of your heart and protect against cancer, they can even help you lose weight.

Consider omega-3 fatty acids, for example. The Journal of Nutrition published a study where rats ate diets rich in DHA (an omega-3 fatty acid in fish oil). The researchers found that these rats experienced a significant decrease in body fat mass, compared to rats that did not receive the supplement.

Other studies have shown why this takes place. First of all, DHA prevents undifferentiated cells from becoming preadipocytes (the precursor to fat cells). It also inhibits the fat-storage capacity of adipocytes (the cells that store fat). So, not only does DHA decrease the total number of fat cells, it also diminishes the ability of existing fat cells to store more fat.

It is also important to note that when rats are fed corn oil (omega-6 fatty acids) they tend to accumulate fat. By the same token, if you eat a lot of processed food, fried foods and conventionally raised meats, you are probably consuming far too many omega-6 fats and too few omega-3s. If you are carrying too much fat, this could be one reason why.

Why Flaxseed Oil Is NOT the Best Source of Omega-3s

When it comes to omega-3 the question often arises, what is the best source?

As always, the optimal source for any nutrient is from food. The very best food sources of omega-3s are wild salmon and sardines. These fish have several times the amount in most other fish. And they have extremely low levels of pollutants, compared to other fish. Grass-fed beef, buffalo and wild game are also a good source of omega-3s.

But it also makes sense to supplement your diet. And in that case, you might have heard that flaxseed oil is the best source. This is not true.

Flaxseed oil does contain omega-3s. But the omega-3s found in plant-based sources are short chain fatty acids (ALA). The fatty acids your body needs most for cardiovascular, brain and skin health are long chain fatty acids (EPA and DHA).

Your body can convert ALA to EPA and DHA, but it is a very inefficient process. Many factors can impact the amount you convert. But most studies show that about 15% of the ALA you consume is converted to EPA. Then only 5% of that amount is converted to DHA.

In other words, to get the all-important DHA your body needs, you would have to consume a huge amount of flaxseed oil.

Or... you could take fish oil. Fish oil is made up almost entirely of usable EPA and DHA. If you want the anti-oxidant and anti-inflammatory benefits of omega-3s, take fish oil, not flax oil.

Does Fish Oil Contain Dangerous Mercury?

As a proponent of fish oil supplements, I am often asked about safety. After all, if fish are contaminated with mercury, wouldn't the oil of those fish also contain mercury? THB reader, SC, writes:

"I took salmon oil for several years but recently stopped after I read that wild salmon is one of the biggest carriers of mercury. How much mercury are you ingesting from salmon oil? And is there a safe fish oil? Mercury toxicity is serious business. What are your thoughts?"

First, I should point out that wild Alaskan salmon is one of the few fish that is predominantly free of mercury. It is farm-raised salmon which commonly contains mercury, PCBs and dioxins. Do not eat farm-raised salmon.

So what about fish oil?

Fish oils are produced by a process called "molecular distillation." By its very nature this process removes most contaminants, including mercury. A few years ago, the nutritional supplement testing company, Consumer Labs, tested 41 leading brands of omega-3 fish oil. They found EVERY brand tested to be free of mercury.

However, a few brands were spoiled (fish oil is susceptible to oxidation). And one brand only had half of the claimed omega-3s. That's why you should always stick to a reputable brand.

Fatty Fish Shown to Prevent Kidney Cancer

Scientists at Sweden's famed Karolinska Institute have discovered that eating fatty fish just a few times per month can significantly reduce the risk of kidney cancer. In the late 1980s, these researchers carefully surveyed 90,000 Swedish women about their diet. Then they followed up with the women more than 10 years later to review their health status.

What they found is that the women who ate at least one portion of fatty fish per week reduced their risk of kidney cancer by 74 percent, compared to women who never ate fatty fish. That is a remarkable risk reduction. But here is the important part. The scientists found NO risk reduction from consuming lean, white-fleshed fish.

So, what's the difference? According to an article by noted cancer researcher, Dr. Ralph Moss, "Oily fish contains up to 30 times more omega-3 fatty acids and three to five times more vitamin D than lean fish." Laboratory studies have shown that these two nutrients are strongly protective against a variety of cancers (not to mention the cardiovascular benefits).

Take your fish oil...

I have only scratched the surface in regards to the benefits of omega-3s. But I hope I have helped to emphasize their importance.

Boost your consumption of these healthy and essential fats by consuming wild Alaskan salmon and sardines. If you eat beef, be sure that it is grass-fed.

And do your health a favor by taking a fish oil supplement. Carlson's lemon flavored is the brand I recommend and take every day. It tastes great. And in my opinion, the liquid is much easier to stick with than taking the capsules every day. In the Consumer Labs report, Carlson's received the highest marks for purity and quality.
